Connecting to Culture
Our Culture Sessions offer youth meaningful opportunities to explore, understand, and appreciate the rich cultural diversity of Lāna‘i, Hawai‘i, and beyond. Through engaging, hands-on activities, students deepen their connection to the island’s traditions and values while broadening their global perspective.
Each session features a variety of cultural experiences, including:
- Music and Dance – Youth learn traditional Hawaiian songs and dances, as well as rhythms and instruments from other cultures around the world.
- Cultural Arts & Crafts – Students create meaningful art inspired by different cultural traditions, from Hawaiian kapa printing to international folk art.
- Guest Speakers and Community Elders – Local cultural practitioners and elders share stories, history, and insights, giving youth a deeper understanding of their roots and the broader world.
- Language Exploration – Participants are introduced to Hawaiian and other world languages through fun and interactive activities that build respect for linguistic diversity.
- Traditional Cooking – Youth learn to prepare and taste traditional dishes, discovering how food connects people to culture, history, and community.
- Festivals and Celebrations – We host mini cultural festivals that highlight customs, music, dress, and food from different cultures, fostering curiosity and inclusiveness.
